GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A winter storm is wreaking havoc on several of the southeastern states, and that's affecting air travel everywhere. South Mississippians may not be dealing with snow, ice, and dangerous driving conditions, but those traveling through Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport are dealing with delays and cancellations.

Thursday's early morning U.S. Airways flight to Charlotte hasn't taken off yet. And the airline's 10:50 a.m. departure is canceled.

Delta has scrubbed its 9:29 a.m. flight from Atlanta to Gulfport.

“The hubs where the airlines fly from Gulfport-Biloxi have been impacted on Monday, Tuesday, and today. We've had two American Airlines flights canceled each of the three days,” said Clay Williams who is the airport executive director.

As the winter storm moves east, North Carolina is getting hit with snow. So, passengers who arrived from Charlotte on Wednesday were happy to know they got out just in time.

“The conference I was attending ended early, and I was able to catch a flight out. I almost missed it just by a little bit. They're expecting six inches, so I'm glad to be back in Mississippi,” said Sarah Snow.

Phillip Norman agreed. "They're getting some wicked snow there, and I'm really glad that I got to miss that. I'm really glad I'm here in Biloxi, and I couldn't be happier that I missed that huge snow storm that's coming in,” said Norman.

The airport's director says his crews haven't had to deal with too many passengers showing up for canceled flights. He says the airlines do a pretty good job of giving advanced notice, but fliers need to continue to check with their carrier throughout the week. “Please check with their airline, call ahead. They should get some sort of notification from their carrier, but best to be proactive then to go ahead and call and make sure there are no further delays and cancellations,” said Williams.
