Man charged with capital murder in sexual assault, slaying of 5-year-old ... - The Republic

GULFPORT, Mississippi — A south Mississippi man was charged Wednesday with capital murder in the slaying and sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl who was taken from an apartment complex last week, police said.

Alberto Julio Garcia, 29, of Gulfport, will be held without bond while awaiting court appearances, Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said during a news conference.

Garcia was identified several days ago as a person of interest in the slaying of Ja-Naya (juh-NAY-uh) Thompson and has been in jail since he was arrested Friday on a burglary charge in an unrelated case.

The child was last seen outside her family's apartment the evening of July 16. Her body was found the next day in an abandoned trailer nearby. The coroner said she was strangled to death.

"This was a crime of opportunity, and she was targeted based on her age," Papania said.

Garcia has applied for a public defender to represent him on the burglary charge but had not been assigned one by Wednesday, said Maj. Ron Pullen of the Harrison County Sheriff's Department. Pullen said Garcia is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Friday on the capital murder charge.

Police arrested another man on unrelated charges last week and also identified him as a person of interest in the little girl's slaying. Papania said the man remains under investigation and is in jail.

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

An area of Gulfport still reeling from the brutal murder of a child last week was hit with another violent death Tuesday night.

According to Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove, Lamont Hayes, 41, was shot in the groin area and bled to death just a few hours later.

All police are saying about the possible suspects is they are two black men who were wearing dark clothes and bandanas over their faces. Both men were armed with guns when they went into Hayes's home and shot him.

Friends and family of Lamont Hayes were driving past the home throughout the day Wednesday hoping the news they heard about Hayes being murdered wasn't not true.

Bernadean Weary and her daughter drove past the house. "He was a real sociable person," Weary said. "He was a kindhearted person and I don't know what kind of person would want to do this to him.

The harsh reality is slowly sinking in for Weary and others who loved Hayes.

"It makes me feel real sad," Weary said. "I knew him and I loved him because he was a very friendly person. Every time I would see him he would smile and give me a hug because we go, like I said, way back.

"I can hardly believe he's gone," neighbor Dee Kurtz said. Wednesday, she couldn't stop looking out her door at Hayes's house waiting for him to come outside. Kurtz said she had known Hayes for 16 years.

"When it's this close to home and knowing him that long, the world doesn't look very good," Kurtz said.

According to police, around 11:30 Tuesday night two men went into Hayes's home, shot him while he was asleep, then tried to steal his car.

"I can't believe all this is happening in my neighborhood," Weary said. "And I now both people, the little girl and her family, as well as Lamont."

With two murders in just one week, Weary said she is not sleeping easy at night. And she has something to say to those responsible for the violence: "They need to stop."

Neighbors and friends say Hayes leaves behind a wife and children.

If you have any information that could help investigators with this case, call Gulfport Police at (228) 868-5959.

This is the sixth murder in Gulfport this year. Three of the murders have been closed. One man was charged Wednesday with Janaya Thompson's death, but so far no one has been arrested in Hayes's murder, or the April 14th murder of 21-year-old Britton Owen at William Bell Apartments.

GULFPORT, Miss. - Gulfport Police have two persons of interest in custody in the capital murder investigation of Janaya (juh-NAY-uh) Thompson, 5, The Sun Herald reported. The pair were arrested on unrelated charges.

Julian Casper Gray III, 31, was booked at the Harrison County Detention Center Friday for rape and sexual battery. Gray allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in April.

Alberto Julio Garcia, 29, was also arrested Friday for residential burglary. Garcia is accused of breaking into the mobile home where Janaya's body was found.

Both men reside at The Palms apartment complex where Janaya lived.

Gray and Garcia are each held on $500,000 bonds.

Janaya was last seen by her family Wednesday night outside their apartment in Gulfport. A search dog helped find her body Thursday morning in the bathroom of a trailer that was about a five-minute walk from the apartment complex.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Friday that Janaya died of "asphyxiation due to strangulation." He would not release other details from an autopsy.

Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said the men were persons of interest "because of materials that have been gleaned in this investigation." He said "considerable evidence" has been collected and will be tested at a crime lab.

Family and friends indicated they thought a man who helped in the search was involved in the killing, but Papania said that man is not a suspect.

"This individual has been cooperating with authorities and has been interviewed and examined," Papania said. "Initial reports relating to this individual's physical condition are not accurate."

Papania said police and the FBI continue to work around the clock and are following every lead. Anyone with information in this case is asked to call 662-868-5959.

Papania said police and the FBI continue to work around the clock and are following every lead. Anyone with information in this case is asked to call 662-868-5959.

7 cases of flesh-eating bacteria reported so far this year in Miss. - Jackson Clarion Ledger

René Olier went fishing June 5 just the way he had for 50 years. He stopped to get live bait and set out for an area south of Cat Island.

The 63-year-old returned about 2:30 p.m. feeling fine, his wife, Linda Olier, said but woke up in the night with chills. Probably just from being in the sun all day, they thought.

The next morning, though, he started having gastrointestinal distress and pain near the hand he’d used to scoop bait. Probably from all the horse flies, he thought. She went to get Benadryl from a nearby store, and by the time she got back his arm was visibly swollen.

The Gulfport couple went to an urgent care clinic near their Shoreline Park camp house, then the emergency room at Hancock Medical Center. Linda Olier said a doctor who examined the swelling suspected an infection from a type of fast-acting bacteria called Vibrio, which has strains that cause cholera or illness after eating undercooked seafood.

Vibrio vulnificus, the so-called flesh-eating bacteria, is a strain occurring naturally in the Gulf of Mexico that breaks down waste matter, including oil. It proliferates in the summer when the water is warm and salinity high. Vibrio is not the same as bacteria that increase from pollution or sewage and therefore is not necessarily more likely to be present in areas where there is a water-quality warning.

Unfortunately, the Vibrio bacteria breaks down whatever is in its path, in this case René Olier’s arm.

Luckily, the Oliers’ daughter had written a Facebook post about his condition. A friend, whose father lost his leg to Vibrio after getting cut on a crab trap, was able to recommend a doctor.

René Olier was transferred to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, where the affected tissue was removed. But by the next morning, his organs were failing.

“(The doctor) said he’s not gonna live through the night unless we amputate his arm,” Linda Olier said, but the procedure saved his life.

“It was the most frightening experience we’ve ever been through,” she said.

They feel lucky, though, after hearing about an Ocean Springs man who died recently of a Vibrio infection. The state Department of Health confirmed the death last week.

“It was eerily similar to what had happened to my husband,” she said.

René Olier said he had never heard of the bacteria before last month.

“We want people to be careful, it’s out there,” he said.

The state has had seven cases of Vibrio infections this year, including all the strains except the one that causes cholera.

Singing River Health System has seen three cases in the past few weeks, but Dr. David Spencer, medical director of wound care and hyperbaric medicine, said that’s not unusual for this time of year.

“Most cases are seen in the warmer months of the summer season due to more people accessing the Gulf and estuary waters, increasing the risk of contact and infections,” he said. “This is not a phenomenon only of Gulf Coast states as there are cases in any area of the U.S. with saltwater coasts and water access.”

Most healthy immune systems can fight off a Vibrio attack, especially if caught early, but any sort of illness or health condition can make it easier for the bacteria to spread.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people with compromised immune systems, especially liver disease, avoid “exposure of open wounds or broken skin to warm salt or brackish water, and avoid consuming undercooked shellfish harvested from such waters.”

Illness begins within one to three days of exposure to Vibrio vulnificus, but as late as seven and rapidly, according to the center. Symptoms include fever; low blood pressure; swelling and redness on arms or legs with blood-tinged blisters; and swelling, redness and pain at a wound site.

Another common type of Vibrio that is most commonly ingested, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, typically causes watery diarrhea with abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention records show Mississippi had 17 reported cases of Vibrio infections in 2012. Louisiana had 52 reported cases; Florida, 145; and Alabama, 20. In 2013, Mississippi had 12 reported cases and Florida had 41. Figures were not available for Louisiana and Alabama.
