2nd arrest in Gulfport police shooting - Mississippi News Now

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Gulfport police say a 19-year-old woman is accused of hindering a prosecution or arrest in the shooting of a police officer who remains in guarded condition.

Chief Leonard Papania said in a news release Monday that Jasmine Nicole White of Gulfport was driving the Chrysler Pacifica that Officer Dolton Bradley tried to stop about 4:20 a.m. Sunday for an expired license plate. He says three men bolted out, Bradley caught one and was shot twice in the abdomen.

Twenty-one-year-old Corey Donald Johnson of Gulfport was charged with attempted murder. His bond is set at $1 million.

Papania says White allegedly lied to investigators. Her bond is set at $50,000.

It was not immediately clear whether either has an attorney.

Johnson was free on $20,000 bond in a drug case.

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Firefighters are investigating two early morning fires, both in Harrison county.

A huge fire in Gulfport's Bayou Oaks subdivision off Cowan Road broke out around 2:30am. Five people were sleeping inside when the fire alarm went off. They smelled the smoke and were all able to get out safely, even the family's dogs. There's no word yet on what sparked the blaze.

Then, about 90 minutes later at 4am, a home caught fire on Kiln-Delisle Road. Again, in this case, a working smoke detector awakened the homeowner. He saw smoke and quickly discovered a fire, which he tried to extinguish on his own. When he couldn't put it out completely, he fled the home and called for help.

The cause is still under investigation, but fire officials suspect the problem may have started in the chimney or fireplace.

Gulfport officer shot during struggle with suspect - Mississippi News Now

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Gulfport police say an officer was shot in the abdomen while struggling with a man after a traffic stop and foot chase.

Chief Leonard Papania says in a news release that the officer was in guarded but stable condition after surgery Sunday.

He says another officer arrested 21-year-old Corey Donald Johnson, of Gulfport. Johnson has been charged with attempted murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million bond.

It was not clear whether he has an attorney.

Papania says Johnson and another person ran from a car at a traffic stop about 4:20 a.m. Sunday.

The chief has not identified the wounded officer, but says he caught Johnson, who allegedly shot him multiple times.

Johnson had been free on $20,000 bond in a cocaine possession case.
