Gulfport Police confirm one of the department's officers shot and killed a Texas man late Thursday night after he reportedly reached for a gun. Rodney D. Biggs of Arlington, Texas died from a single gunshot wound.
The officer was investigating an accident in the area of Highway 49 and Middle Drive when the shooting occurred.
According to Gulfport Police, Biggs crashed his truck into a power pole just after 11:00 Thursday night. When police arrived at the scene, they asked Biggs to get out of the truck, but he refused to cooperate. When an officer tried to remove him, he reportedly reached for his gun, and police fired.
An American Medical Response crew pronounced Biggs dead at the scene. No one else was in the truck at the time of the accident, and no other vehicles were involved.
The shooting is still under investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. The Biloxi Police Department is assisting in that investigation.
