A Gulfport man with seven prior felony convictions, dating back to 1998, will spend every day of the next 17 years behind bars, thanks to Mississippi's habitual offender law.
Winfred Derone Bolding, 43, was sentenced Tuesday for burglaries of two Harrison County homes that occurred in November of 2013 and October of 2014. Jury selection was scheduled to begin this morning, but the defendant changed his mind and decided to plead guilty.
Prosecutors said all of Bolding's prior convictions were for burglary, one of which was a previous burglary of a home.
The first of these most recent cases occurred on the morning of November 25, 2013, a witness reported seeing Bolding try to kick in the front door of a home near Oakleigh Avenue and Monica Drive in Gulfport. The neighbor immediately called an off-duty Gulfport police officer that lived in the area, who was able to locate Bolding in the area. After a brief chase, the officer held him until on-duty officers responded.
Then, on the morning of October 3, 2014, Bolding was caught running out of a home near Park Row Avenue and East Old Pass Road in Long Beach. In that case, the owner of the home received a call from his 19-year old daughter who was at house and heard someone kick in the back door. The home owner immediately called 911.
"The Long Beach Police Department quickly responded and heard noises coming from the garage area and caught Bolding as he attempted to flee from the rear of the residence," said ADA Robert McCormick who prosecuted the case.
Because he was prosecuted under the habitual offender laws, Bolding will serve every day of his 17-year sentence and will not be eligible for parole or early release.
