Gulfport police: Gunfight at apartmentplex leaves one dead, one arrested - SunHerald.com

JUSTIN MITCHELL/SUN HERALD Officials are investigating the death of a man shot outside of Ashton Park Apartments in Gulfport around 12:01 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2015.

GULFPORT -- Dozens of residents stood near crime scene tape Sunday as investigators interviewed potential witnesses of a shooting that left a man dead Sunday afternoon.

Hours later, one man, Tevon Johnson, 20, of Gulfport, was in custody, arrested on a charge of aggravated assault. He's being held at the Harrison County jail on a $100,000 bond set by Justice Court Judge Melvin Ray.

Gulfport police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said the shooting was reported around noon in the Ashton Park apartment complex on Cuandet Road.

Upon arrival, McDaniel said officers found a man lying unresponsive near building 15 of the complex.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove later pronounced Robert Johnson, 18, dead on-scene. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, Hargrove said.

Johnson lives in Gulfport but is originally from Jackson.

During the investigation, McDaniel said, police determined the dead man and Tevon Johnson had gotten into an argument with a third man, who then left the area.

From there, McDaniel said, Tevon Johnson and Robert Johnson followed the man to his apartment, where Tevon Johnson pulled out a firearm and shot at the man.

The third man, identified by police as a victim in the case, then armed himself and started firing, resulting in a gun ight. Robert Johnson was then struck in the head.

McDaniel said a preliminary investigation determined the shooting isn't related to any other recent shooting in the city.

Officials spent much of Sunday afternoon canvassing the complex, interviewing witnesses and examining the crime scene. Some residents had to wait to enter nearby units until the investigation was complete.

Police will hold a press conference regarding the shooting at 11 a.m. Monday at the Gulfport Police Department.

Anyone with any information regarding this crime is asked to call the department at 868-5959.
