GULFPORT, Mississippi — Harrison County emergency director Rupert Lacy says low-lying roads near the county's two rivers are starting to flood as a second wave of thunderstorms crosses the Mississippi coast.

Authorities in Harrison and Jackson counties say many roads in Biloxi, Gulfport, Moss Point and Pascagoula flooded during storms overnight but buildings remained dry.

Lacy says the flash floods subsided after the rain, filling drainage ditches. He says drivers are encouraged to drive cautiously and stay out of any standing water.

He says that as more storms crossed the area Tuesday afternoon, both the Biloxi River and the Tchoutacaboeuffa (SHOO-tuh-kuh-BUFF) River were nearing flood stage.

Jackson County emergency director Terry Jackson says heavy storms offshore Tuesday afternoon were expected to come through his county, and rivers were expected to reach flood stage.
